Do you know what it's like to go to a coffee shop when you have autism? This video gives you a taste. You can experience a taste of life with autism thanks to Carly Fleischmann, an 18-year-old with a form of autism that leaves her unable to communicate verbally or through sign language. Professionals predicted that Carly would only reach the intellectual capacity of a small child, and that seemed to be the case until she sat in front of a computer for the first time at age 11. Her first typed words were "hurt" and "help." Her parents were astounded—they didn't know Carly could spell, and she’d never written anything before. Her family quickly discovered that Carly’s intelligence was that of a teenager, not that of a small child. They also discovered the frustration Carly felt at not being able to express herself. By typing, Carly found her voice. Over the years, Carly has written more and more—she published a book and writes often on her blog and on twitter. She daily provides an eye-opening look at life with autism and continues to inspire her family and online community with her poignant words and encouragement. What do you find most encouraging about Carly’s story? Let us know on the comment section of our page!
